Overview of the Medical Examiner Service

Process Steps Post Death
- GP notifies the Medical Examiner’s Office.
- Medical Examiner reviews the death and contacts the next of kin to explain the cause of death and address concerns.
- Information is sent to the GP to complete the medical certificate of cause of death (MCCD).
- MCCD is approved by the Medical Examiner and sent to the Registry Office.
- Next of kin is informed and can schedule death registration.
Interaction with Next of Kin
- Next of kin can discuss the cause of death and raise concerns.
- Questions about medical care and terminology are addressed to improve understanding and future care.
- Speaking to the Medical Examiner Office is encouraged but optional.
Coroner’s Involvement
- Some deaths must be legally referred to a coroner, with the Medical Examiner providing medical advice as needed.
